Delayed due to carrier time constraints – a workflow status

What the status means when a carrier reports a shipment delay caused by time constraints on its side, and how to send the customer an e-mail or SMS for it.

Last updated:

Sometimes a carrier reports that a shipment won’t arrive on time because of time constraints on its side – for example, when shipments reach the depot late. For this kind of delay, the workflow has its own status, “Delayed due to carrier time constraints”. This gives you a more precise reason why the parcel is late, and you can send the customer a message that explains the situation.

How to send an e-mail or SMS for this status

  1. Go to “Communication” → “Workflow” and click the workflow you want to edit.
  2. On the “Communication” tab, in the “In Transit” group, find the “Delayed due to carrier time constraints” row. It is right below the “Delivery today” status.
  3. Switch on the “E-mail” toggle.
  4. If you have the SMS module switched on, you can choose under “SMS” between “Always” (an SMS whenever the order reaches this status) and “Fallback only” (an SMS only when the e-mail cannot be delivered to the customer). For more, see the articles SMS to customers and Fallback SMS when an e-mail is not delivered.
  5. Save the workflow. If it isn’t active yet, activate it with the “Activate” button.

By default, this state sends neither an e-mail nor an SMS.

By default, Foxdeli sends neither an e-mail nor an SMS for this status – neither in new workflows nor in workflows you created earlier. If you want to let the customer know about the delay, switch it on yourself. If you have several workflows (for different markets or carriers), set up the status in each of them.

What the customer sees

  • The e-mail has the default subject “Your order is experiencing a delay”, the heading “Your order has been delayed” and a link to the Track & Trace page. You can edit the texts in “Communication” → “Mailing”: open the template and select the “Delayed due to carrier time constraints” status at the top of the editor.
  • The SMS tells the customer that the order will be delayed and contains a link to track the shipment. You can edit the text in “Communication” → “SMS”.
  • The Track & Trace page shows the delay on its own, even if you don’t send an e-mail for this status. By default, it shows the text “The order has encountered an unexpected delay”. You can edit it in “Communication” → “Tracking page” after selecting the same status.

Which carriers report this status

The status occurs only when the carrier sends information that describes such a delay. It is reported by PPL, DPD, GLS, UPS, Speedy, Cargus and WEDO, for example. For carriers that don’t send this information, the status never appears.

Where to find delayed shipments in the app

  • In the order list and in the order detail, the shipment is labeled “Time reasons”.
  • In “Issues”, you can filter them by the “Time reasons” issue. For more, see the article Order issues.
